    History of Our Chapter

Loudoun County is one of the fastest growing counties in the country. Nestled in the heart of the county is the town of Leesburg, which is home to more than 2,000 businesses ranging from multinational corporations and start-up technology companies to specialty retail and home-based businesses.

With so much growth and economic development in our area, it is not surprising that a small group of Human Resources professionals decided to establish a professional organization dedicated to supporting the needs of HR professionals in our community.

The Leesburg-Greater Loudoun chapter of SHRM was first organized in April 1996. Although there were other local chapters of SHRM in the Northern Virginia area at that time, it was felt that there would be the support needed to begin this venture in the Leesburg area. David Miles, temporary president during formation of our chapter stated, "Given the explosive growth in our region, the timing for the creation of this new chapter couldn't be better." An application to charter the Leesburg-Greater Loudoun chapter was submitted to SHRM in November 1996 and the chapter was officially constituted at the Dulles Chapter meeting that was held on February 19, 1997.

Ryan Ricci served as the first President of the Leesburg-Greater Loudoun chapter which began with 19 charter members. The first official meeting of the chapter was held on March 4, 1997. According to Ryan Ricci, "In this area, there's been a void for human resources managers and executives interested in sharing common interests. The formal group we've established will create an invaluable resource for the community, involving representatives from many industries, education, business and government." In fact, the chapter has grown to serve the needs of a diverse group of human resources professionals who either live in or work in our community. By the end of the first quarter 1997, the chapter had grown to 21 members. Currently the chapter is home to approximately 50 active members.
